Each class begins with an open discussion which may or may not include: show & tell, current events, culture tips, pest problems, and introductions of new plants. The class will also include lectures or hands-on workshops from the following speakers.

2/12 – The Hahamonga Nursery – Nick Hummingbird (GFAS)

Hahamonga Cooperative Nursery is an invaluable asset to the Arroyo Seco and Southern California, providing low-cost native plants for restoration, conservation and park uses. Nick Hummingbird is the Hahamongna Nursery Manager. Nick has worked on the Channel Islands doing large-scale habitat restoration with the National Park Service and also received training from Theodore Payne Foundation and Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden in Claremont. http://www.arroyoseco.org/nursery.htm

2/19 – Understanding Color in Flowers – Harold Koopowitz

We will use orchids as examples to understand how color in flowers comes about and controlled. We will look at the kinds of pigments that flowers make and how the flower is built to display various colors and patterns.

2/26 – Bee Keeping – Danny Finkelstein & The Valley Hive

This presentation will cover the history of beekeeping and how beekeeping has evolved to the present day, best ways to keep bees in an urban environment, why bees are necessary, and how to use bees to make a great garden better. www.thevalleyhive.com

3/12 – Planning Your Summer Garden – Christine Anthony

It’s never too early to start planning your Summer Garden. Our guest will offer great tips of plant choices with an eye towards cooking delicious Summer Meals. Christine Anthony is the Renee’s Garden Seeds rep to The Arboretum and a UCCE Master Gardener, she shares practical tips learned from life long experience in the garden and the kitchen. Please be prepared to share your recipe ideas and gardening tips with one and all, too.

3/19 Matt Tufenkian – Scented Geranium Garden

Learn the joys of these easy-care, good-smelling, drought-tolerant plants! Matt-Dell will share with us about his family legacy and favorite plants – geraniums. He will show slides from the building of the Scented Geranium Garden (which he helped to create) and then lead us on a walk-through tour.
