The mushroom identification class will cover the main characteristics of mushrooms used to identify mushrooms to genus and species. The class will cover the major genera and species that are common to Southern California and where they are likely to be found. The most common wild edible mushrooms and those that are poisonous will be covered. The edibility of many mushrooms is not known as they are either too small or woody to be of interest. A one hour walk through the gardens will follow the lecture to look for mushrooms and other interesting fungi.

Dr. Jerrold Turney has served as the curator of the camellia gardens at the Huntington Library and Botanic Gardens, a research horticulturist at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, and is currently the plant pathologist for the Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures for the County of Los Angeles.
