This class is held in the garden, and requires some walking throughout the collections.  The Arboretum’s collection of over 18,000 accessioned plants is roughly divided into five geographic sections, two greenhouses, and several other specialty collections and exhibits. Arboretum Botanical Information Consultant Frank McDonough will take you out onto the grounds to learn more about these fascinating & extensive collections.  Be sure to wear comfortable, rugged shoes, a hat and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty - and bring drinking water.

Oct. 7, 11          World Wide Wood

Look at some of the more interesting timber-producing trees in our collection and find out about their history, things that are made from them, and their future.

Oct. 21, 25        Pirate Plants

Plants of South America and the Spanish Main  South America and the Caribbean’s sometimes tragic cultural history is the backdrop for this tour which highlights the area’s plants and the history of their local and international use. 

Nov. 4, 8           Survivor Plant -Desert Trek

You’re a plant that’s been dropped into the desert with nothing but your genes; how will you survive? Would you put on a hairy blanket in the searing desert heat? Some plants do just that. Found out just what plants do to survive the extremes of heat, cold, dryness, wetness and darkness by putting yourself in the place of a common mustard plant that's dropped into these situations and has to survive by evolving different characteristics to thrive in these extreme environments.

Nov. 11, 15       Singing Thorns & Drunken Elephants: Animal-Plant Relationships

A tour of the African and Australian section plants that looks at the sometimes necessary, sometimes nefarious, and sometimes hilarious relationships that animals form with them.

Dec. 2, 6           From the Stairway to Heaven to the Gates of Hell: Plants with Religious, Spiritual and Ritual Significance

A look at plants in our collection that that have spiritual and ritual significance to the world’s religions, and some that may have created religion itself.
