January 7 Water-wise Irrigation with Bob Galbreath
What every gardener needs to know: the basics on techniques and equipment for water-efficient irrigation in urban landscapes! Bob is an irrigation consultant with 30 years of experience in landscape water conservation. A former Certified Irrigation Designer and landscape contractor, he recently retired as a Landscape Water Resources Manager with the Environmental Programs Division of the City of Santa Monica.
January 14 Heirloom Vegetables and Antique Flowers with Rosalind Creasy
This lushly illustrated program by the “mother” of the edible landscape movement offers a second look at classic vegetables and flowers, and explains why gardeners should grow them, and how to use these delicious and gorgeous varieties in the landscape. Rosalind is a garden and food writer, photographer and garden designer. The long-awaited revision of her classic Edible Landscaping will be released in spring 2010. January 21 California Native Plants: Gardening with the Senses with Bart O’Brien
California native plants are ideally suited to bringing all five senses – touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight – to home gardens. This program offers Bart’s favorite species and cultivars for local landscapes. Bart is director of special projects at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont. He is co-author of California Native Plants for the Garden and Care & Maintenance of Southern California Native Plant Gardens.
January 28 Field trip to Huntington Botanical Gardens with Jim Folsom, San Marino: 9:30am-12:30pm
This very special Thursday morning tour stops at the Huntington’s Botanical Center, plus the interactive Conservatory for Botanical Science, inviting Children’s Garden and exquisite new Chinese Garden. Our guide for the morning: Jim Folsom, director of the Huntington Botanical Gardens. Our excursion ends with a fabulous plant sale in both the general nursery and succulent areas. Pre-registration required.
February 4 Framing Design through Landscape Ecology with Sarah Peterson
Learning to “read the landscape” and analyze in terms of ecology is critical for design – on any scale – that emphasizes a landscape’s intrinsic beauty, demonstrates local stewardship and supports ecosystem services. We’ll view examples of recreational, residential and storm water management projects. Sarah is the principal at LandSpaces, a landscape architecture firm specializing in ecologically based site planning and landscape design services (www.landspaces.net ).
February 11 Common Landscape Diseases with Jerry Turney, Ph.D.
This class for gardeners offers the fundamentals for diagnosis and management (including prevention) of various diseases of ornamental and edible plants in local gardens. Dr. Turney has served as the curator of the camellia gardens at the Huntington Botanic Gardens, a research horticulturist at The Arboretum, and is currently the plant pathologist for the Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures for the County of Los Angeles, as well as a certified arborist and a licensed agricultural pest control advisor.
February 18 Aussies You Should Know with Jan Smithen - Part 1
Inspired by their vigor in Los Angeles-area landscapes, Jan’s illustrated lecture proclaims the unusual and durable beauty of Australian plants from Adenanthos to Westringia. After the talk there will be plants for sale, donated by Jo O’Connell and her Australian Native Plants Nursery (www.australianplants.com ). Jan is the author of Sun Drenched Gardens: The Mediterranean Style. For over two decades, she taught the popular Fanatic Gardeners classes (that had a two year waiting list!) at The Arboretum.
February 25 Three Tantalizing Taxa with Jim Henrich
Plant nuts: Board the tram with The Arboretum’s curator of living collections! Learn about the Magnolia collection (55+ taxa) and the Quercus engelmannii grove (one of the largest remaining stands in Los Angeles County). In transit, he’ll enlighten us about other Arboretum collections and history. The morning ends with a rare tour of the orchid collection, with details on its diversity and acquisition protocols. Pre-registration required.
