November 2008

Hello all and welcome newcomers:

My intern Ian Capiluto has finished his stint at our Library, so the cataloging speed is slower. I have two more interns from San Jose State University coming in January, though, so we will get back up to speed. I am pleased to have our new historian, Mitchell Bishop, on staff. He will have the library open Sunday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is a great benefit to our weekend customers. My volunteers, Pam Wolken and Barbara Zaias, have been working hard getting the magazine and nursery catalog records into the online catalog. Take a look. Do a search for the word ‘periodicals’ and you will see the richness of the collection. Right now we have 509 periodical titles in the catalog! My favorite new periodical title is Aloe, the newsletter of the South African Aloe and Succulent Society. The link is to the catalog is below.

Arboretum Library Online Catalog

This link below is to the new books, articles, and websites lists for November. The New Book Shelf is waiting for you!

New books, articles and website lists

We are circulating to Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation members. The circulation period for books is 3 weeks with 2 renewals if no one else wants the item. You can renew by e-mail, phone or in person, but not on the online catalog. The circulation period for current magazines is 3 days with 2 renewals if no one else wants the item. Let me know if you are interested in any articles.

In order for the “Request this title” function in the online catalog to work, I have to set you up as a customer. Then it will send me an e-mail requesting that I get the item for you. If you’d like to be set up as a customer, contact me by e-mail, phone, or in person.

The Arboretum Library hours for December are as follows:

Open Tuesday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Open Saturday, December 13, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Open Sundays, December 7, 14, 21, 28 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Closed Tuesday-Saturday, December 23-27

Closed Tuesday & Wednesday, December 30 & 31.

I will be on leave.

Our Botanical Information Consultants (for plant advice) are currently available six days a week, Monday-Saturday at David.Lofgren@Arboretum.org or Frank.McDonough@Arboretum.org or 626-821-3239.

Happy reading!
And here is the rest of it.
